How to Start a Job Search

It’s like trying to find a job feels like you are at the bottom of a mountain. Although you know that the view from the top is breathtaking, it will take some climbing. Sometimes, the hardest part is taking the first step.
We’ve compiled a few steps to make it easier for you to climb the job search mountain.

Five Steps to Get Started in Your Jobs Search

1. Prepare your resume

Your resume is your most important tool in your job search. Your resume is the foundation of your job hunt.

Although you will need to customize your resume for every job, having an up-to-date resume makes it easier to modify the details for each application.

Include current employment dates on your resume. Also, include any achievements, new skills or positions that you would like hiring managers to see. Double-check your contact information as well to ensure that it is up to date.

2. Polish your Profile

You can bet that a hiring manager will look you up online after reading your resume. You want them to be impressed with what they see.

Your social media accounts should be professional and clean. Although they aren’t required to be business-related (you do have a personal life), it is important that you don’t post anything offensive or incriminating. It’s like telling your grandma that you wouldn’t want her to see it. The same goes for hiring managers.

Next, consider ways to improve your online presence. You might consider adding more projects or examples of your work on your LinkedIn profile. Do you think it would be a good idea to ask your colleagues for recommendations? Do you think it is worth creating a website for your own personal promotion?

You can do a lot of things online, but the most important thing is to be proud of your online reputation.

3. Touch Base With Your Network

It doesn’t matter how cliché it may sound, “It’sn’t what you know, but who you know” is true. When you are looking for a job, your network can be an invaluable asset.

It’s always a good idea to keep in touch with your contacts and find out who may be able to help you find the perfect job. The more people in your corner, you are the better. Reach out to select members of your network to tell them that you are looking for a new opportunity.

Tell them exactly what you are looking for. Are you looking for a position in mid-management? Do you only have a particular interest in certain industries? Are you looking for something more remote? You can provide more information to them and they will be more helpful in pointing you in the right direction for potential opportunities.

4. Find your Favorites

Sometimes the job search can feel overwhelming. This is partly because there are so many resources available. Do you need to look within your network for job opportunities? LinkedIn One of the many job boards?

The smartest thing to do, as with everything else, is to focus your efforts so you can maximize your time. Be clear about what you are looking for.

5. Set some goals

You have one goal in your job search: to find a job. It can be difficult to achieve this goal, and it is easy to become discouraged if you don’t make any progress.

You can stay on track and not lose sight, by creating a job search strategy. Are you looking to apply for a specific number of jobs each week. Are you looking to schedule a certain number of informational interviews per month?

You will be able to keep track of your progress and hold yourself accountable. This is a great way for you to keep your head up in times of discouragement when searching for a job can seem overwhelming.
Get on the Climb!

It is often said that the hardest step is the first. These five simple actions will hopefully inspire you to start your climb up the career ladder.
